Prefacio del editor

El Dr. Moo, que ha sido durante muchos años profesor en la Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (Deerfield, Illinois) y editor del Trinity Journal, entrega a este comentario el rigor de un exegeta de primera clase al que le preocupan igualmente tanto las implicaciones teológicas del texto de Romanos como su aplicación práctica. En su «Prefacio del autor», detalla las felices circunstancias en las que su (ya finalizado) comentario se convirtió en parte de la presente serie.

Aunque será evidente para el lector perspicaz que el Dr. Moo ha tomado un rumbo independiente en muchos lugares importantes (sobre todo en su interpretación de 7:7-25), sin embargo, ha desarrollado un punto de vista (más tradicional) de la carta que no es especialmente popular entre los especialistas actuales de Romanos. Prefacio del autor

La historia de cómo se originó este comentario es complicada. En 1983 Moody Press me pidió que contribuyese con un comentario sobre Romanos a su nueva serie del Comentario exegético Wycliffe. Comencé a trabajar y en 1991 produje el primer volumen del mismo, (Romanos 1–8). Poco después de la aparición de dicho volumen, sin embargo, Moody Press decidió cancelar la serie. Por lo tanto, comencé a buscar desesperadamente un editor que estuviese dispuesto a volver a publicar Romanos 1–8, junto con el segundo volumen de la obra, en el que ya estaba trabajando. La providencia divina quiso que la editorial William B. Eerdmans estuviese en ese mismo momento buscando a alguien que escribiese un comentario revisado de Romanos para el Nuevo Comentario Internacional del Nuevo Testamento. Con mucho gusto acepté su oferta de incluir mi obra en su serie.

Las naturalezas muy diferentes de las dos series de comentarios requirieron revisiones bastante exhaustivas de mi primer volumen. Esto resulto ser tanto una maldición como una bendición. La maldición era tener que transferir la argumentación más detallada de mi volumen de Wycliffe a las notas al pie de la serie del Nuevo Comentario Internacional —lo que requería reescribir extensamente el texto y las notas. Pero la bendición fue que esta reescritura me permitió mejorar mis argumentos y depurar mi estilo en muchos lugares. Los lectores de Romanos 1–8 en Wycliffe deben saber, no obstante, que he hecho algunos cambios de fondo —un matiz aquí, una advertencia allá y, por supuesto, la interacción con las obras eruditas que han aparecido desde Romanos 1–8.

En el prólogo de mi volumen de Wycliffe escribí que no lamentaba (en 1990) mi decisión de escribir un comentario sobre la ya muy trabajada carta de Pablo a los Romanos. Sigo sin lamentarlo, porque lo que hace tan desafiante el estudio de Romanos es al mismo tiempo lo que lo hace tan gratificante: el ser forzado a reflexionar acerca de tantas cuestiones básicas para la teología y la práctica cristianas. Al mismo tiempo, estoy más convencido que nunca de la necesidad de interactuar con «la nueva perspectiva sobre Pablo» que figura en este comentario. Ruego que lo que he escrito preste un servicio a la iglesia y que los lectores de esta obra crezcan en ese tipo de «teología práctica» que de verdad cuenta delante de Dios: «la doctrina de vivir para Dios», como la definía el puritano William Ames.

II. Una nota respecto al uso de las fuentes secundarias

El intérprete de Romanos se enfrenta al peligro de que el texto que escribió Pablo se vea oscurecido por las ingentes cantidades de material que otras personas han escrito sobre el texto. A Thomas Hobbes se le atribuye haber dicho: «Si leyera tantos libros como la mayoría de la gente, sería tan estúpido como ella». Ciertamente es fácil para el intérprete de la Escritura sustituir la lectura profunda del propio texto por un montón de lecturas acerca del texto. En ningún libro de la Biblia es esta tentación mayor que en los romanos, y espero no haber sucumbido a ella.

En cualquier caso, he tratado de mantenerme centrado en el texto y, al mismo tiempo, interactuar con la mayor cantidad posible de literatura secundaria.

A pesar de ello he sido muy selectivo, citando apenas a los eruditos que fuesen representativos de una visión concreta, o que hubiesen sostenido particularmente bien dicha visión. Con respecto a este punto, es necesario advertir al lector acerca de la diferencia entre una simple referencia a una obra y una referencia precedida por «ver especialmente». La primera indica solamente que la obra en cuestión es representativa de aquellos que argumentan en favor de una posición en particular mencionada, pero la segunda significa que la obra en cuestión proporciona un argumento particularmente bueno respecto al tema de que se trate.

He citado los comentarios solamente por el apellido del comentarista; el lector puede suponer, salvo que se indique lo contrario, que se hace referencia a lo dicho por el comentarista respecto al versículo en cuestión. He citado de la misma manera otros volúmenes empleados en este comentario, estos se incluyen a continuación en el apartado «Otras obras significativas».

La siguiente lista de comentarios está lejos de ser exhaustiva: Romanos, en virtud de su importancia teológica, ha atraído a un número incontable de comentaristas (Cranfield [1.30-44] ha realizado un estudio particularmente bueno de los comentarios hasta 1973). Estos van desde los tomos técnicos, eruditos, repletos de latín y griego y una amplia interacción con otros eruditos, hasta las homilías escritas pensando no tanto en el análisis del mensaje de la carta, sino más bien en su aplicación.

El lector encontrará pocas referencias a este segundo tipo, ya que dichos libros, por su propia naturaleza, tienen poco que decir sobre el significado del texto. No obstante, una excepción notable — si es que pertenece a esta categoría en absoluto — son los sermones editados de D. M. Lloyd-Jones. Sus relevantes aplicaciones homiléticas surgían de una perspicaz exégesis teológica, y el lector puede ver en las notas lo mucho que su exégesis ha influenciado mi propio pensamiento sobre el texto.

Por otro lado, respecto a las obras que podrían ser llamadas con precisión «comentarios», he consultado tantas de ellas como he podido. Al darme cuenta desde el principio de mi labor de que era poco práctico e innecesario citarlas a todas —ya que los argumentos y conclusiones se repetían constantemente— seleccioné doce comentaristas de los que hago un estudio especialmente cuidadoso. Tres factores formaron parte de mi decisión: excelencia exegética, sofisticación teológica, y significación representativa. Estos comentarios pueden ser llamados —tomando prestada una frase de la crítica textual— los «testigos constantes» de mi comentario, y en la lista que hay a continuación vienen precedidos de un asterisco (*). Considero a estos eruditos como mis «sparrings exegéticos», y remito al lector a los mismos con frecuencia.
