– Die beste mir bekannte Antwort auf die Frage, die ich guten Freunden immer stelle: »Was soll ich mit meinem Leben anfangen?«

Während der Arbeit an diesem Buch saß ich jeden Abend 20 bis 30 Minuten in der Sauna, um mich zu entspannen. Danach ließ ich mich auf dem Rücken liegend im Pool treiben und betrachtete die Sterne durch die Zweige der Bäume. Im Licht einer einsamen Glühbirne las ich in der Fass-Sauna poetische Texte wie Grashalme, um mein Gehirn herunterzufahren. Oder – auf Empfehlung – Zen in the Art of Archery von Eugen Herrigel.

Ich hatte gerade mit dem Bogenschießen begonnen und machte zwei bis drei Pausen am Tag, um je 18 Pfeile abzuschießen. Für das Praktische hatte ich Lehrbücher und einen Trainer. Zen in the Art of Archery schien dagegen zu 80 Prozent aus Unsinn und zu 20 Prozent aus genialen philosophischen Einsichten zu bestehen.¹ Doch es war eine willkommene Abwechslung, eine Art mentaler Dehnübung, und das reichte mir.

Eines Morgens sprach mich mein Forschungsassistent an, den ich für die Arbeit an diesem Buch aus Kanada mitgebracht hatte. Ich holte mir gerade Essen und kaltes Wasser aus dem Kühlschrank:

»Du bist so ruhig. Wie kannst du so ruhig sein, wenn es 1.000 Dinge zu tun gibt?«

Ich dachte darüber nach. Er hatte recht. Ich hatte wirklich viel um die Ohren. Die Abgabefrist für mein Buch rückte näher, es gab ungefähr ein Dutzend unerwartete berufliche Schwierigkeiten, mein Hund hatte sich gerade schwer verletzt, unser Auto war kaputt und gleichzeitig waren auch noch verschiedene Familienmitglieder und Gäste zu Besuch. Es war einfach sehr viel los, und ich musste alles managen.

Vor den Abgabeterminen meiner Bücher war ich sonst immer nervös und angespannt – ich war ein extrem unangenehmer Zeitgenosse. Was war diesmal anders?

Plötzlich wurde es mir klar. Ich erklärte meinem Mitarbeiter: Beim Lesen und Wiederlesen der in diesem Buch enthaltenen Tipps hatte ich doch mehr aufgenommen, als mir bewusst gewesen war. Mein Autopilot nutzte Jockos »Gut«, lud Mara zum Tee ein wie Tara Bach, betrachtete die Sterne, wie BJ Miller und Ed Cooke es tun, und behandelte meine Ängste, wie Caroline Paul es auf der Golden Gate Bridge getan hatte.

Ich mache gern Listen. So halte ich normalerweise mein Leben in Ordnung und meine Welt wohlorganisiert. Am meisten überraschte mich an meiner Ruhe, dass ich dafür keine Listen brauchte. Ich hatte mir einfach täglich ein oder zwei Tipps der Titanen durch den Kopf gehen lassen, und – wie Carl Fussman sagte – »das Gute bleibt«. Was ich im jeweiligen Moment brauchte, fiel mir tatsächlich ein. Je mehr ich las und darüber nachdachte, umso stärker bemerkte ich die Wirkung.

Vielleicht 16 Stunden nach dem Gespräch am Kühlschrank war ich völlig fertig, wollte etwas ins Schwitzen kommen und mich dann Abkühlen. Ich ging allein in die Fass-Sauna, setzte mich und atmete den Geruch des Zedernholzes ein. Mit dem Schweiß verließ mich auch die Anspannung des Tages. Mit Zen in the Art of Archery kam ich langsam zum Ende. Eine Passage, welche die Abschiedsworte des japanischen Meisters wiedergibt, ließ mich mehrere Minuten innehalten. In leicht gekürzter Form lautet sie:

Ich muss dich nur vor einem warnen. In den letzten Jahren bist du ein anderer Mensch geworden. Denn das ist die Bedeutung der Kunst des Bogenschießens: Ein tiefer und weitgehender Wettkampf des Bogenschützen mit sich selbst. Vielleicht hast du es noch gar nicht bemerkt, aber du wirst es ganz deutlich spüren, wenn du wieder in deinem Heimatland bist und Freunde und Bekannte triffst: Die Dinge werden nicht mehr so zusammenpassen wie früher. Du wirst alles mit anderen Augen sehen und mit anderem Maß messen. [Das ist mir auch passiert, und es passiert allen, die vom Geist dieser Kunst berührt werden.]

Zum Abschied, der doch kein Abschied war, überreichte der Meister mir seinen besten Bogen. »Wenn du mit diesem Bogen schießt, wirst du den Geist des Meisters in deiner Nähe spüren …«

Ich musste lächeln.

Für die Nerds unter Ihnen: Das erinnerte mich an das Ende der Rückkehr der Jedi-Ritter, nachdem die Allianz das Empire besiegt hat. Luke Skywalker blickt in den Nachthimmel von Endor (bitte weiterlesen, es ergibt gleich Sinn) und sieht dort die schimmernden, lächelnden Geist-Figuren von Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda und Anakin Skywalker.

Die ersten beiden waren immer bei ihm, und alle drei würden auf ewig bei ihm sein.
